Introduction: Cottage industries are those that are done at home. Both men and women can take part in them. In Bangladesh, women do not work out of doors. They pass most of their time idly. They can easily earn some money if they devote a portion of their time and energy to cottage industries.

 

Beneficial to rural people: Cottage industries are within the easy reach of all. Among these hand spinning, poultry, gardening, fruit growing and sericulture are worth-mentioning. If these industries are taken up and conducted properly, they are sure to do great benefit to our people.

 

Varieties: Cottage industries existed in our country in the past. Some of them exist here even today. They are so varied that it is difficult to name them all. Weaving, spinning, dyeing, soap making, comb making, button making, leather work, wood-works, bamboo works are still undertaken by our people. The mats of Sylhet and Khulna really show the great talent of the people. The once-famous fine Muslin may be revived and reorganized.

 

Damage done by foreign rules: Cottage industries are very useful to the countries like our Bangladesh. The long foreign rule did not encourage cottage industries in our country. This policy was adopted to turn our country into the market of foreign goods.

 

Usefulness: Cottage industries are very useful to our people. Now it is our duty to revive our cottage industries and develop them properly. Thus our country may be freed from the curse of the unemployment and poverty.

 

Conclusion: Long ago Bangladesh was rich in cottage industries. The 'Muslin’ of Dhaka was once famous all over the world. Cottage industries are very useful to our people. We may enhance our national income by cottage industries.
